Summary
The growing number of behavioral health patients often outpaces the resources in our Emergency Departments. Death by suicide is the 5th most frequently reported Sentinel Event to The Joint Commission with self-harm coming in at number 7. Studies have shown that 1 in 4 outpatient suicides will result in litigation with healthcare providers. During this month of suicide prevention, this session will take a deep dive into exploring recent healthcare-related events, the mind and thought process of the suicidal person, and easy, inexpensive things you can implement to reduce the likelihood of suicide within your organization. The presenters will also offer best practice suggestions for supporting your teams after a death by suicide and to prevent suicide amongst your workforce.
Learning Objectives:
Upon Successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
-
- Define a tool to assess patient suicide risk
- Describe 3 ways to reduce the risk of suicide within their organization
- Identify a process to support employees following a traumatic incident
