SCAHRM August Webinar 1

August 7, 2020 at 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Remote Witness Preparation

Speakers: Mark Basurto & Sarah Greenwood from CogentEdge

In this session, we identify the real goals of witness preparation and how emotional pitfalls, if not addressed, can impede effective witness testimony. Utilizing innovative steps to teach strategic thinking, we demonstrate how witnesses can learn to speak their whole truth to defend their case. Considering today’s virtual world, we will also show how these techniques prove just as effective when learned through videoconference preparation versus in-person preparation.

  • Examine the real goals of witness preparation.
  • Outline the innovative steps that should be used with every witness to prepare them to speak their full truth.
  • Identify the emotional impediments to effective witness testimony.

About the Speakers:

Mark Basurto, Managing Attorney of CogentEdge, has over 25 years of litigation and courtroom experience. He has tried over 50 jury trials and handled hundreds of evidentiary hearings in state and federal courts, as well as in arbitration with the American Arbitration Association, the National Association of Securities Dealers and JAMS. He brings to CogentEdge significant experience representing a variety of different professionals in malpractice cases and representing both publicly and privately held companies in high-stakes litigation. From his diverse experience, Mr. Basurto understands that even the most sophisticated professionals who get sued have difficulty speaking their truth because of fear, anxiety, or a misunderstanding of the litigation process. As a result, his current witness preparation practice is focused on empowering professionals with the skills and confidence needed to take command of their own testimony and ultimately drive the case to a successful result. Mr. Basurto has attained an AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell, signifying the highest level of professional excellence. He is a Florida Super Lawyer (2013 through 2018) in the practice area of Professional Liability and was previously named to Florida’s “Legal Elite.” He is a former shareholder of Bush Ross in Tampa, Florida.

Sarah Greenwood has over 17 years of experience trying medical malpractice, bad faith, product liability, and drug and medical device cases on behalf of her clients. Even before working with CogentEdge, Ms. Greenwood was always quick to identify the emotional burdens that prevented some of her clients from defending themselves during their depositions, and she recognized the need to address and relieve those emotional burdens before they testified. Her own practice and experience made her a natural at using CogentEdge’s PowerWitness Process to transform her clients into better witnesses. Ms. Greenwood has served as the Managing Partner of Munson, Rowlett, Moore & Boone, P.A. in Little Rock, Arkansas. She has been a MidSouth Super Lawyer every year since 2013, and in 2018, was honored as one of The Best Lawyers in America. Ms. Greenwood has achieved an AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating afforded for legal ability and ethical standards from the confidential opinions of the Bar and the Judiciary. Ms. Greenwood’s background, training, and experience give her the tools to prepare professionals in a variety of industries for deposition and trial.
