Diversity Equity and Inclusion: Improving Healthcare Through a Systems Transformation Approach

Description of Program

This esteemed panel of experts will discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare through the lens of systems transformation and quality improvement. The panelists will discuss various strategies to identify and eliminate systemic biases that result in disparities in outcomes among specific patient populations, as well as systemic and interpersonal biases impacting providers and staff. The presentation will include an overview of recent changes to federal and state laws and regulations, followed by a Q&A session. Participants will have the opportunity to meet the panelists and network with colleagues during a reception immediately following the event.

Speakers

Mikel Whittier:

Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the UCLA Health System. Mikel focuses on quality improvement and systems transformation to enhance access to quality, affordable care for marginalized demographics.

Christopher Campbell:

University Counsel in USC’s Office of the General Counsel. Chris advises the health system on a variety of healthcare issues, including litigation, risk management, compliance, regulatory, employment, government investigations, insurance, medical staff, managed care, and transactional matters.

Pamela S. Hamilton:

Vice President of Risk Management for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Pamela oversees enterprise risk management activities for a complex academic medical center and health system, including hospitals and outpatient clinics.

Yesenia Curiel:

Director of Cultural and Linguistic Competency and Associate Vice President of Behavioral Health and Crisis Intervention Services at AltaMed Health Services. Yesenia has developed curriculum and expanded professional development to enhance staff understanding and awareness regarding health equity and the impact of vicarious trauma.

Continuing Education Credit

SCAHRM is approved as an MCLE Multiple Activity Provider by the California State Bar and a Continuing Education Provider by the California Board of Nursing.

This activity is approved for 1.0 MCLE credit hours and fulfills the elimination of bias requirement.

This activity will qualify for 1.0 BRN contact hours and will satisfy BRN continuing education requirements in implicit bias (B&P § 2811.5(g))
