ABOUT THIS ROLE:
This is a mid-level, non-supervisory role in our Risk Management and Patient Safety Department. This position reports to the Senior Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety. In this role you will serve as an expert risk consultant to over 600 healthcare entities insured by BETA Risk Management Authority and HealthPro RRG and consulting services clients. You will review, design and support the policy or organizational programs based on national, statewide and local trends and make recommendations at the senior management level to enhance safety and mitigate risk at member organizations. As part of the HEART team, you will facilitate change and assist with growing member, insured, and client programs to embed the principles of honest and open communication with patients and families, and providing support to caregivers when harm occurs. Also, you will be integral in the education components of risk management programs and services to include leading and promoting patient safety and risk management initiatives. This position will travel up to 40% of the time within the state of California, Oregon and Washington. This position allows 100% telecommuting and must be based a commutable distance near any one of offices: Alamo, Glendale, Granite Bay or San Diego.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
• Manages complex accounts
• May serve as individual contributor to various programs and services.
• Collect, input, and perform analysis of relevant data to draw conclusions and develop data stories. Analyze relevant data concerning patient injury, aggregates data summaries. Works with Risk Analyst to conduct statistical analysis of loss trends and evaluates other risk management and patient safety data.
• Demonstrated competence in advanced literature review. Provides information to support patient safety questions posed by members and insureds
• Identifies standards, regulations, and best practice models to support and direct patient safety efforts.
• Develops safety initiatives, programs, services, tools, and resources to enhance safety at member sites.
• Manages and coaches participating organizations to achieve identified milestones and validation in targeted patient safety programs
• Collaborate with and coach organizations participating in BETA HEART in their identification, reporting and response to harm events
• May develop and publish educational content for BETA members, insureds, and clients
• May research topics and publish newsletters for BETA members and insureds.
• Serve as a consultant to members of BETA’s Professional Liability services in their area of expertise. With the assistance of more senior team members as needed, provide high quality, standards and evidenced based consultation services to members upon request and proactively when a need is identified. May assist others to develop consultative feedback to members and insureds.
• May serve as consultant to external clients under service contract.
• May conduct advanced onsite risk or program specific validation assessments at assigned member or client sites. Prepare risk assessment or validation assessment reports and share findings and recommendations with members or clients post-survey.
• Adjust and update service plans based upon safety assessment data and observations.
• Identify and proactively influence the adoption of BETA services and programs that would be most beneficial to the member to opt in to. Explain the key objectives of the domain to the member and the expected benefits. Communicate and coordinate with members and domain owner from inception to validation.
• Maintain current and accurate documentation of account activities via service plans and in other electronic systems
• Identify methods to spread process improvement.
• This position requires 40% travel within the state of California, Oregon and Washington

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in healthcare-related field; Master’s degree preferred.
• RN, NP, PA, CNS or PharmD required.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in risk management or patient safety serving as an industry consultant or in a hospital or healthcare system.
• Minimum of 5 years’ direct clinical healthcare experience required.
• CPHRM required.
• CA license strongly preferred
• CPPS preferred.
• The Just Culture Company certified within six months of hire or promotion.
• Trained in TeamSTEPPS/Crew Resource Management principles within 12 months of hire or promotion.
• Trained in human factors/safety science within 12 months of hire or promotion.
• Previous experience with communication and resolution program(s) and demonstrated commitment to adopt strategies to support a comprehensive, principled and systematic approach to harm in healthcare
• Demonstrates emotional intelligence.
• Exhibits empathic communication.
• Applies critical thinking and uses advanced problem-solving techniques.
• Ability to work independently as defined or under general direction of direct supervisor.
• Fosters a positive and collaborative team culture
• Demonstrated ability to carry out multiple or varied tasks with long-range goals (multi-year); ability to establish priorities and arrange own activities.
• Follows channels to escalate to management when necessary.
Hiring base salary range: $185,000-220,000 annually depending on experience
• Note the amount listed is the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this position. Individual rates for the same job title may differ based on their level, responsibilities, skills, and experience for a specific role.
