Speakers

Angela Peachy-Larson

Angela serves as the Corporate Director of Risk Management for the Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation, bringing over 17 years of experience in hospital operations. She began her career as a nurse and held multiple roles at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, including positions in the Emergency Department, Medical-Surgical Unit, Pediatrics, and NICU, before transitioning into risk management. Angela earned a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Grand Canyon University and holds several professional certifications, including CPHRM in Risk Management, CPXP in Patient Experience, and APPRC in Patient Relations. In her current role, she oversees consultations, the development of risk initiatives, patient safety programs, and organizational education. Her responsibilities also encompass team debriefings, patient and family disclosures, incident investigations, grievance management, claims management, and lessons learned implementation. In addition to her professional role, Angela serves as President of the California Association of Patient Relations, Vice President of the Hawai‘i Association of Healthcare Risk Management, and is a Past President of the Southern California Association of Healthcare Risk Management. Outside of work, Angela enjoys spending time with her husband and three sons. She is an avid surfer, scuba diver, and sailor, and enjoys beach activities as well as quality time with friends and family.

Michelle Aronzon

Michelle Aronzon is a licensed attorney and registered nurse with over 35 years of experience in healthcare. She is the Founder and Executive Director of The Foundation for Healthcare Quality, a non-profit foundation that provides compliance and risk management support services to healthcare providers. As an attorney, Ms. Aronzon advises and represents healthcare providers on a wide range of complex, multi-dimensional issues impacting long-term and day-to-day operations. Prior to her current role, she served as Associate Risk Management Counsel for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she continues to serve as an advisor to the Bioethics Committee. Ms.Aronzon obtained her Juris Doctor from The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, her MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Administration from Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. She is a Certified Professional in Health Care Risk Management and a Fellow of the American Society for Health Care Risk Management. She is also the current President of the Southern California Association for Healthcare Risk Management, and she has lectured and written on a wide range of legal, compliance, and risk management topics impacting health care providers

Tejal Patel

Tejal (TJ) Patel is a seasoned healthcare leader with nearly 20 years of experience in risk management, insurance, and legal counsel. She serves as Associate Risk Management Counsel at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she oversees claims management, develops risk mitigation strategies, and designs innovative insurance programs to support patient safety and organizational resilience. TJ is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management, serves on the Board of Directors for the Southern California Association for Healthcare Risk Management, and frequently lectures on risk financing and insurance topics.

Kate McDonnell

Kate McDonell is a seasoned insurance broker with over 15 years of experience advising not-for-profit hospitals, large health systems, medical groups, and foundation models on complex risk financing strategies. At Chivaroli & Associates, she specializes in designing insurance and alternative risk transfer programs that align with the evolving operational and financial risks faced by healthcare organizations. Kate works closely with healthcare executives and risk management teams on liability program structure, captive utilization, and enterprise risk financing approaches for sophisticated healthcare systems. She frequently collaborates with hospital risk managers to translate complex insurance structures into practical strategies that protect balance sheets and support organizational resilience. At the Southern California Association for Healthcare Risk Management conference, Kate will present an introductory session on healthcare risk financing designed to help new risk managers understand the fundamentals of how hospitals structure and fund their risk programs

Johanna Klohn, MPH, Esq

Johanna Klohn serves as the Chief Risk Officer for The University of California-LosAngeles (UCLA) Health System. She is responsible for the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Program, including coordinating the Professional, General, and Employment liability insurance processes and related risk mitigation for UCLA Health. Her more than 35 years of experience in Healthcare include over 20 years in Healthcare Risk Management, insurance defense litigation, and a clinical background as an Immunohematology Scientist. She is an active member of the California Bar, received her law degree from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, and her Master’s in Public Health from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.

Maria Olton

Maria Olton, MSN, RN, CCRN, CPPS, CPHR, is the Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety at BETA Healthcare Group. An experienced RN with 20 years in healthcare, Maria began her career in critical care before transitioning into leadership roles focused on risk management, patient safety, and organizational culture. In her current role, she co-leads the Culture of Safety and Communication & Transparency domains of BETA HEART?, as well as BETA’s Just Culture program. Maria is recognized for her ability to support leaders, guide teams through complex challenges, and promote system-wide safety practices. Her work focuses on building trust, strengthening communication, and cultivating cultures where staff and patients feel safe, supported, and valued.

Paisha Schaneberg

Paisha Schaneberg, MHA, CPPS, co-leads BETA HEART Care for the Caregiver domain and BETA’s Just Culture program. A certified Just Culture and TeamSTEPPS master trainer, she has helped organizations across the state promote, develop, and deploy safety culture programs. She holds a Master of Healthcare Administration and a Certificate in the Administration of Long-Term Care Programs from the University of Southern California. In 2020, she was honored with the Los Angeles Business Journal Educational or Institutional Program of the Year award for her leadership in establishing a comprehensive Care for the Caregiver program, recognized for its impact on staff well-being and organizational culture.

Continuing Education:

SCAHRM is approved by the California State Bar as an MCLE Multiple Activity Provider (MAP #18946) and a Continuing Education Provider by the California Board of Nursing (CEP #10552).

This activity qualifies for up to 5.0 MCLE credit hours and up to 5.0 BRN continuing education contact hours.

This activity is approved for up to 5.0 contact hours of Continuing Education Credit toward fulfillment of the requirements of ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) and DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow), and towards CPHRM renewal.
