SUMMARY:SCAHRM January Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss SCAHRM’s first educational session of 2023! \n \nBrain Death Revisited: Legal\, Ethical and Practical Implications\nWith special guest speakers Mary De Los Reyes & Andy Oppenberg\nToday\, whether someone is dead or alive largely depends on what state they are in\, what facility they are in\, which provider is making the determination\, and what diagnostic tests are used.  The stated definition of brain death in the Uniform Determination of Death Act (UDDA) and the actual practice of diagnosing brain death don’t match. These inconsistencies threaten public trust in physicians\, their brain death diagnoses\, and even brain death as a concept.  We will discuss the legal/risk management\, bioethical controversies in death determination\, proposed changes to the UDDA and organ procurement after death.  Ethical issues include whether patients should have the right to choose the criteria used to determine their deaths. We will explore how risk managers can help mitigation risks associated with family challenges. \n\nObjectives \n\nThrough a case study\, identify proactive risk management & bioethics strategies when families disagree with brain death diagnoses)\nUnderstand the history of federal and state determination of death laws under Uniform Determination of Death Act (UDDA) and Changes (RUDDA)\nApply  proactive risk management and bioethical consultation across the 8 ERM domain to  death determination cases.\n\n  \nAbout the speakers: \nMary is the Director of Enterprise Risk Management and In-House Counsel for Summit Healthcare in Show Low\, AZ.  She holds RN licenses in CA and AZ and is an active member of the Bar in both states.  After 20+ years of experience as a NICU and L&D nurse\, and then practicing law in a med-mal defense firm in California\, she began her Risk Management career in 2004.  Mary moved to Arizona in 2016.  She has a passion for patient safety and enjoys the challenge of being the go-to medical-legal resource for Leadership and staff.  She is a past president of the SCAHRM and AZSHRM chapters of ASHRM. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDr. Andrew Oppenberg\, DPS\, MPH\, HEC-C\,CPHRM\, DFASHRM\, has decades of experience in risk management/patient safety\, bioethics and eight years of experience in various clinical and medical research arenas. SUMMARY:SCAHRM September Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Implicit Bias in Healthcare: We All Have it\, What Now?\nDr. José Ramos\, M.D.\nOver the past few decades\, we have made strides in advancing the discussion and surrounding the need to eliminate health care disparities and the need for more diversity within the healthcare workforce. Despite these advances\, health care disparities persist and have even widened\, and the health care workforce still does not reflect the society it serves. \nWhile institutions committed to diversity and inclusion have made progress against overt discrimination\, unconscious bias poses continued barriers to achieving a diverse and egalitarian health care system. \nDuring this session we will discuss the biology of implicit bias\, the role it plays in decision making\, how this affects our patients\, health care systems and strategies to mitigate bias at a personal and organizational level. \n  \nCredit:\nThis program has been approved for 1.0 hour of BRN continuing education credit.  MCLE and ASHRM have been applied for and are pending. \n  \n \n  \n  \nAbout the speaker:\nDr José Ramos is the son of activist parents who modeled the importance of fighting against racial\, housing\, education and immigrant injustice. Prior to entering the field of medicine\, he created health education television content that included anti-tobacco campaigns and programing focused on reducing childhood obesity in communities of color. \nHe obtained his undergraduate degree in Physiological Sciences from the University of California at Los Angeles and his Medical Degree from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He completed his Family Medicine training at the USC-Dignity Health FMRP where he served as Chief Resident. He was honored to be a founding faculty member of the Charles R. Drew University FMRP before joining the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center FMRP in 2019. \nAs an academic family physician\, Dr Ramos is helping reshape residency training by focusing on the intersection between population health\, physician leadership and social justice. He was chosen to be an Emerging Leaders Fellow by the Society for Teachers in Family Medicine and sits on the Board of Directors for Physicians for Social Responsibility. He is dedicated to marginalized communities of color\, mentoring pipeline students\, advocating for Latin American refugees\, fighting for environmental justice and championing policy reform including Medicare for All.

SUMMARY:SCAHRM Risk Management Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nDo you miss the opportunity to share your experience and challenges with peers and network with other SCAHRM members? We feel the same way! last fall\, SCAHRM board\, in partnership with your Education Committee\, launched a new and innovative way for us to NETWORK. \nThe first Risk Management Roundtables in the Fall were engaging and collaborative. SCAHRM Members got together to share stories\, ask questions and get the support and energy that normal networking provided in the past. Attendees provided and received much needed input from other risk management professionals\, attorneys and insurance experts. \nThere is no cost to attend this session\, but it is open to SCAHRM members only*\, and limited to the first 20 registrants. As an attendee-driven program\, we ask that you include several questions or scenarios you would like to discuss during our hour together when you register. We look forward to “seeing” new and returning members during this collaborative session. \n*you may sign up or renew membership during the registration process \n
