SUMMARY:“Too Busy to Be Burned Out!” - The Risk Professional’s Journey to Balance and Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:  \nRisk professionals face relentless professional and personal demands\, and balance often feels out of reach. Burnout has become a frequent topic in risk management circles\, but often goes unaddressed personally until it becomes critical. This creates a paradox: many are “too busy to be burned out\,” yet too burned out to sustain their work. This session tackles that reality with a blend of acknowledged best practices and candid personal insight. Gregg Timmons shares his own journey through imposter syndrome\, emotional exhaustion\, and severe burnout during and after the pandemic—driven in part by his own self-imposed rules. His story of recovery highlights what it takes to confront burnout with honesty and fortitude. Participants will explore practical strategies for managing their own “personal and professional risks” through balancing professional demands\, preventing exhaustion\, and building resilience. The session ultimately invites attendees to re-evaluate their professional well-being and uncover the drivers that matter most for a more balanced\, fulfilling career – and life. \n  \nLearning Objectives: \nUpon completion of this session\, participants will: \n\nRecognize common professional demands and self-imposed rules that contribute to the paradox of being “too busy to prevent burnout.”\nDescribe effective strategies for addressing burnout and building resilience\, such as coaching\, self-care\, or mindfulness.\nDevelop a personal action plan that re-evaluates professional well-being\, explores personal and professional motivational drivers\, and prioritizes resilience for a sustainable career.\n\nSpeaker:\n \n\n\nGregg Timmons\, JD\, RN\, MA\, CPHRM\, FASHRM is the founder and principal of Mahina Honu Consulting\, where he draws on more than four decades of experience spanning nursing\, law\, healthcare risk management\, patient safety\, and organizational leadership. His career has included leadership roles within healthcare systems\, professional liability and captive insurance programs\, and national healthcare consulting. He is a past president of the California Society for Healthcare Risk Management (CSHRM) and currently serves as president of the Hawaii Association for Healthcare Risk Management (HAHRM). \nGregg is a longtime educator and speaker on healthcare risk management\, patient safety\, and professional well-being. He has presented at ASHRM national conferences in 2006\, 2009\, and 2016\, as well as for state and regional healthcare risk management organizations nationwide. In July 2026\, he presented his program on burnout and healthcare professionals as a national ASHRM webcast. His presentations combine healthcare risk management experience with practical insights into the human factors that influence resilience\, professional identity\, and the way healthcare professionals respond to sustained workplace stress. \n\n\nDate: Thursday\, August 27\, 2026\nTime: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM (PST)\nCost: $20 for Members | $35 for Non-Members\nRegister Today!\n  \n\nSCAHRM is approved by the California State Bar as an MCLE Multiple Activity Provider (MAP #18946) and a Continuing Education Provider by the California Board of Nursing (CEP #10552).\n\n\n\nThis activity is approved for 1.0 MCLE credit hour and 1.0 BRN continuing education contact hours.
