DESCRIPTION:Risk Management and Patient Safety Professionals as the Third Victims of Adverse Events in the Era of COVID-19\nAlan J. Card\, PhD\, MPH\, CPHQ\, CPHRM\nAssistant Professor\, UC San Diego School of Medicine\n  \nWhen adverse events take place in healthcare\, it is usually patients and their families who are harmed most –but the negative impacts don’t always stop there. Over the past 20 years\, there has been increasing attention to “second victims\,” the clinicians who experience psychological (and sometimes physiological) harm as a result of their involvement in an adverse event. This presentation extends that logic to look at harm to the risk management and patient safety professionals who investigate adverse events and try to solve the problems they uncover. It describes the sources of harm to these “third victims\,” the types of harm they can experience\, and potential solutions to reduce that harm. \nPlease consider taking this short (~5 min) anonymous survey on risk managers’ stress during the COVID-19 pandemic: https://ucsd.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8jnFKut4onpWUpD.  Results will be presented during the session.  Everyone is invited to participate in the survey\, even if you won’t be able to attend the webinar. \nPlease submit your response by Saturday\, August 15th. \n\nSession Objectives\n\nDifferentiate between first victims\, second victims\, and third victims of adverse events\nIdentify the sources of harm to third victims and the forms of harm third victims can experience\nIdentify actions that could help to reduce the burden to third victims\, as well as challenges organizations may face in addressing this problem\n\nAbout the Speaker\nAlan Card is an Assistant Professor at the University of California\, San Diego School of Medicine. His research tackles questions related to quality\, safety\, risk\, and well-being in healthcare\, with a particular focus on improving how healthcare organizations improve. \nHe is a former Editor of the Journal of Healthcare Risk Management and the inventor of several patient safety risk management tools\, including: The Active Risk Control Toolkit\, the Generating Options for Active Risk Control Technique\, the Lovebug Diagram\, and the risk curve approach for risk matrices. \nDr. Card holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge in England\, an MPH from the University of South Florida\, and professional certifications in healthcare quality (CPHQ) and healthcare risk management (CPHRM). \nCredit\nThis program qualifies for 1.0 hour continuing education for BRN.  MCLE and ASHRM/CPHRM are pending. \nProvider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing\, Provider Number CEP10552\, for 1.0 contact hour. \n

Considering today’s virtual world\, we will also show how these techniques prove just as effective when learned through videoconference preparation versus in-person preparation. \nObjectives: \n\nExamine the real goals of witness preparation.\nOutline the innovative steps that should be used with every witness to prepare them to speak their full truth.\nIdentify the emotional impediments to effective witness testimony.\n\n  \nCredit: \nThis program qualifies for 1.0 hour continuing education for BRN and MCLE.  ASHRM/CPHRM credit is pending. \nProvider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing\, Provider Number CEP10552\, for 1.0 contact hour. \n  \nAbout the Speakers: \nMark Basurto\, Managing Attorney of CogentEdge\, has over 25 years of litigation and courtroom experience. He has tried over 50 jury trials and handled hundreds of evidentiary hearings in state and federal courts\, as well as in arbitration with the American Arbitration Association\, the National Association of Securities Dealers and JAMS. He brings to CogentEdge significant experience representing a variety of different professionals in malpractice cases and representing both publicly and privately held companies in high-stakes litigation. From his diverse experience\, Mr. Basurto understands that even the most sophisticated professionals who get sued have difficulty speaking their truth because of fear\, anxiety\, or a misunderstanding of the litigation process. As a result\, his current witness preparation practice is focused on empowering professionals with the skills and confidence needed to take command of their own testimony and ultimately drive the case to a successful result. Mr. Basurto has attained an AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell\, signifying the highest level of professional excellence. He is a Florida Super Lawyer (2013 through 2018) in the practice area of Professional Liability and was previously named to Florida’s “Legal Elite.” He is a former shareholder of Bush Ross in Tampa\, Florida. \nSarah Greenwood has over 17 years of experience trying medical malpractice\, bad faith\, product liability\, and drug and medical device cases on behalf of her clients. Even before working with CogentEdge\, Ms. Greenwood was always quick to identify the emotional burdens that prevented some of her clients from defending themselves during their depositions\, and she recognized the need to address and relieve those emotional burdens before they testified. Her own practice and experience made her a natural at using CogentEdge’s PowerWitness Process to transform her clients into better witnesses. Ms. Greenwood has served as the Managing Partner of Munson\, Rowlett\, Moore & Boone\, P.A. in Little Rock\, Arkansas. She has been a MidSouth Super Lawyer every year since 2013\, and in 2018\, was honored as one of The Best Lawyers in America. DESCRIPTION:Access and Functional Needs Disaster Risk Assessment\nSteven Storbakken\, L. Vance Taylor\, and Kevin Muszynski\nPomona Valley Hospital Medical Center\n\n“Access and Functional Needs” is a term developed by FEMA\, referring to those individuals who may need additional assistance before\, during and after an emergency event\, in areas including maintaining independence\, communication\, transportation\, supervision and medical care. FEMA has estimated that 40 to 50% of the nation’s population\, some 150 million individuals\, has one or more AFN requirements. \nPomona Valley Hospital Medical Center\, (PVHMC)\, a 412 bed Level II Trauma Center in Northeastern Los Angeles County\, partnered with the California Office of Emergency Services\, (Cal/OES)\, in 2016 to develop an AFN Disaster program. An AFN Task Force was created\, composed of experts in the field including hospital emergency managers\, clinicians\, and organizational and agency leaders.  Core to the project is an extensive AFN Disaster Risk Assessment that considers the unique needs of over 60 different AFN communities across 3 categories: \n\nMedical Issues (Chronic Conditions; Physical Disabilities and Psychological Disorders; Dependencies on Medications\, Medical Services and Equipment; Significant Injury/Illness; and Pregnancy)\nCultural\, Ethnic\, Religious and Socioeconomic Needs and Restrictions\nAge-related Issues (all Minors and most Older Adults)\n\nThe risk assessment evaluates each AFN community’s likelihood of need (based upon size\, susceptibility and historical data)\, the potential for disproportionate harm caused by escalating emergency events\, and the hospital’s AFN resources across 10 specific areas.  Use of this tool enables any healthcare provider organization to assess its current level of AFN disaster preparedness\, and to identify opportunities for improvement in meeting the unique needs of the vulnerable populations it serves. \n  \n \nCredit:  This program qualifies for 1.0 hour continuing education for BRN and ASHRM/CPHRM.  MCLE credit is pending. \nProvider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing\, Provider Number CEP10552\, for 1.0 contact hour. \nThis meeting has been approved for a total of 1.0 contact hours of Continuing Education Credit toward fulfillment of the requirements of ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) and DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow) and towards CPHRM renewal. \n\nAbout the Speakers: \nSteven Storbakken\, KM6RWC\, MBA\, CHEP\, CHSP\, CHEM\, CHPA\, HACP\, CHPP: Updated IAHSS Basic Security Officer Training Manual’s Emergency Management Chapter.
