SUMMARY:SCAHRM October Webinar: Medically Unpreventable Wounds Presented by Dr. Caroline Fife
DESCRIPTION:SCAHRM is excited to announce our October Webinar:\nPresented by Dr. Caroline Fife\nLearning Objectives\n1. Understand the “inside-out” mechanism of severe pressure injuries due to vascular infarction\n2. Discuss the implications for creating better pressure injury mitigation strategies\n3. Identify practical ways to reduce legal risk around medically unpreventable events \nSession Summary\nSevere pressure injuries\, misleadingly called “never events” and incorrectly touted as being preventable with optimal nursing care\, are often the result of tissue infarctions due to systemic hemodynamic factors rather than prolonged external pressure on the capillaries. These “inside-out” injuries—especially deep tissue injuries (DTIs) and Stage 4 ulcers—are often ischemic events involving specific named arteries (angiosomes) which are proximal to the area of visible tissue injury. Observations of pressure injuries occurring without direct local pressure challenge the traditional view and underscore the role of compromised perfusion in their formation. Despite best practices in skin care\, nutrition\, repositioning\, and support surfaces\, a persistent 10–20% prevalence of pressure ulcers remains\, highlighting the limitations of current prevention protocols. The legal and regulatory environment continues to hold clinicians accountable under the assumption that all pressure ulcers are preventable\, creating a disconnect between policy and pathophysiology. Recognition of this vascular paradigm demands a shift toward prevention strategies that address tissue perfusion and may enable us to create objective definitions of medical unpreventability. Without reframing pressure injuries as medically unpreventable ischemic events in some cases\, risk management efforts may misdirect resources and perpetuate clinical and legal injustice. \nSpeaker\n \nCaroline E. Fife\, MD\nProfessor of Geriatrics\, Baylor College of Medicine\, Houston\, TX\, CMO Intellicure LLC\nUHMS\nDr. Caroline Fife is a nationally recognized expert in wound care and real-world evidence research. She completed a Family Medicine residency at the University of Texas\, Southwestern in Dallas\, followed by a two-year fellowship in Environmental Medicine at Duke University. For 23 years she was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston\, where she served as Medical Director of the inpatient Wound and Ostomy program and established both the Memorial Hermann Center for Wound Healing and the Lymphedema Treatment Center. She now serves as a Professor of Geriatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and as the Chief Medical Officer of Intellicure\, LLC.\, a health information technology company which she co-founded. She is the Executive Director of the U.S. Wound Registry (USWR)\, a non-profit organization recognized by CMS as a Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR) which has developed a suite of CMS-recognized wound-care relevant quality measures. She co-developed the Wound Healing Index\, a risk stratification model which\, on the first patient visit\, can predict the likelihood that a given wound will heal. One model can reliably predict the likelihood of pressure ulcer healing\, allowing practitioners to report pressure ulcer healing rates to Medicare based on severity factors that include the level of illness of the patient. \nShe has made major contributions to the understanding of pressure ulcer formation\, particularly through her work demonstrating that many pressure injuries originate from infarctions of named arteries – an “inside-out” process known as angiosomal ischemia. This perspective reframes traditional thinking about pressure ulcer formation and prevention\, shifting attention from surface pressure alone to underlying circulatory factors. \nDr. Fife serves on the boards of the Alliance of Wound Care Stakeholders (past co-chair)\, the Critical Limb Ischemia Global Society\, and the American Diabetes Association’s Amputation Prevention Alliance. She co-chairs the Real-World Evidence Work Group for the Wound Care Collaborative Community and has previously held leadership positions with the American Academy of Wound Management\, the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care\, and the American Professional Wound Care Association. She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters\, edited three textbooks\, and led key research projects including the development of real-time lymphatic imaging in collaboration with Dr. Eva Sevick. Her current research focuses on leveraging real-world data for comparative effectiveness studies to identify the most effective treatments for patients with chronic wounds and ulcers. \nDate: Thursday\, October 9\, 2025\nTime: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM (PST)\nCost: $20 for Members | $35 for Non-Members\nRegister Today!\n  \n\nSCAHRM is approved by the California State Bar as an MCLE Multiple Activity Provider (MAP #18946) and a Continuing Education Provider by the California Board of Nursing (CEP #10552).\n\n\nThis activity qualifies for 1.0 MCLE credit hour and 1.0 BRN continuing education contact hours. This meeting is pending approval for a total of 1.0 contact hours of Continuing Education Credit toward fulfillment of the requirements of ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) and DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow) and towards CPHRM renewal. SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn Webinar: The New Frontier in Safety: Fire Prevention in Ambulatory Care
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThe majority of healthcare encounters today occur in ambulatory care settings. We have pushed more and more procedures not only from inpatient ORs to outpatient ORs but also from ORs to clinic settings. Yet these clinic settings are often not equipped with the same personnel or equipment as an ambulatory surgical site. Through case examples this presentation will explore the high risk of fire in the everyday office setting. Using the enterprise risk management model the presenters will offer recommendations from their own “lessons learned” about how to prevent patient and caregiver harm from fire. \nObjectives:\n\nBe able to identify at least 3 key elements of a fire prevention program in ambulatory.\nIncorporate at least 1 safety story into their own ambulatory fire safety training.\nExplain what makes ambulatory care a high-risk fire setting.\n\nSpeaker:\n \n\nJason Williams\, MHA\, CPHRM. UCI Health Assistant Director of Risk Management\nJason Williams has a progressive career in healthcare over the last 17 years\, including experience in Risk Management within the community hospital setting and complex academic health systems. His passion continues to grow within Risk Management specifically when advocating for patients and healthcare professionals\, while implementing efficient system-based changes to help keep patients safe\, thereby reducing risk exposures for the organizations he serves. \n\nCost:\n$20 members; $35 non-members.\nPlease note: No refunds are given for cancellation or non-attendance.  If you have registered for this event and are unable to attend\, please contact SCAHRM at vp@scahrm.org at least 24 hours prior to the event. \n  \n \n  \nContinuing Education:\nSCAHRM is approved for 1.0 BRN continuing education contact hours. DESCRIPTION:Implicit Bias in Healthcare: We All Have it\, What Now?\nDr. José Ramos\, M.D.\nOver the past few decades\, we have made strides in advancing the discussion and surrounding the need to eliminate health care disparities and the need for more diversity within the healthcare workforce. Despite these advances\, health care disparities persist and have even widened\, and the health care workforce still does not reflect the society it serves. \nWhile institutions committed to diversity and inclusion have made progress against overt discrimination\, unconscious bias poses continued barriers to achieving a diverse and egalitarian health care system. \nDuring this session we will discuss the biology of implicit bias\, the role it plays in decision making\, how this affects our patients\, health care systems and strategies to mitigate bias at a personal and organizational level. \n  \nCredit:\nThis program has been approved for 1.0 hour of BRN continuing education credit.  MCLE and ASHRM have been applied for and are pending. \n  \n \n  \n  \nAbout the speaker:\nDr José Ramos is the son of activist parents who modeled the importance of fighting against racial\, housing\, education and immigrant injustice. Prior to entering the field of medicine\, he created health education television content that included anti-tobacco campaigns and programing focused on reducing childhood obesity in communities of color. \nHe obtained his undergraduate degree in Physiological Sciences from the University of California at Los Angeles and his Medical Degree from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He completed his Family Medicine training at the USC-Dignity Health FMRP where he served as Chief Resident. He was honored to be a founding faculty member of the Charles R. Drew University FMRP before joining the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center FMRP in 2019. \nAs an academic family physician\, Dr Ramos is helping reshape residency training by focusing on the intersection between population health\, physician leadership and social justice. He was chosen to be an Emerging Leaders Fellow by the Society for Teachers in Family Medicine and sits on the Board of Directors for Physicians for Social Responsibility. He is dedicated to marginalized communities of color\, mentoring pipeline students\, advocating for Latin American refugees\, fighting for environmental justice and championing policy reform including Medicare for All.
